Reading Test (50 Marks)
Read
the passage. Then answer the questions below.
The women folk of our country can add to the economy of the country. They already have proved that without their participation, no economy could bring
sustainable development for its people. To bring a positive change in our
entire socio-economic structure, women's participation at every level must be
guaranteed in reality. It is undeniable that economic backwardness is one of the prime causes for women's destitution. The majority of the people living under
poverty are women. Women at workplace do not get their desirable and just wages
against their contributions. Women's contribution is devalued not only in the
workplace but also in their own house. A full and absolute participation in
every sphere of life, ‘including decision making, is vital to eliminate
discrimination against women and improve their status. The statistics shows
that there
are approximately twice as many illiterate women as illiterate men. Because of their illiteracy they are not aware of their
rights without which a dignified life cannot be led. Violence at home against
women is prevalent in our country. Dowry and inability to give birth to male
child are two reasons that cause violence to women. Women silently endure the violence
to continue their marital bond. The problem and status of women need to be
addressed properly.(212 words)
